4.2.3.
Type 3: Change/Resume

These suffixes describe verbs whose actions involve transitions or shifts from a previous condition or activity.

-choH (change of state or direction)

The suffix -choH indicates a transition or shift—either in the nature or direction of the action. It marks the start of something new or different from the previous situation.

  • maDo'choH - we are becoming lucky or our luck is turning around (Do' - be lucky)
  • ghoSchoH - he/she begins to go (somewhere) (ghoS - go)

In the second example, the implication is that before this moment, the subject was either stationary or moving toward a different destination. Depending on context, this suffix can be translated into English as "become" or "begin to."

-qa' (resume or restart)

The suffix -qa' shows that an action previously occurring, which had been interrupted or stopped, is now starting again.

  • vInejqa' - I am resuming the search or I am searching for him/her again (nej - search)
